What are “organic/natural” search engine rankings?

Organic/natural rankings are attained by search engine optimization. The top search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing among others have different algorithms or formulas to display their results. Organic/natural rankings are based on content and relevancy. The specific keyword or phrases on the pages within your site help you to achieve high rankings. The more compelling and “authoritative” your content is for a specific keyword or keyword phrase, the higher the page will rank.

For example, let’s suppose a visitor searches for the keyword “coffee.” On the search engine results page (SERP), the visitor clicks on the different links. If the page the link is directed to engages the visitor and the visitor continues to browse the site, the site earns “points” for that keyword. The more points a page receives for the different keyword, over time, the higher the page will rank. If the visitor leaves the page too quickly or “bounces out,” it’s like points against the site for that specific keyword.

Although, this is a fairly simplistic way of looking at it, it should you some insight on how it works.

Search engine optimization (SEO) helps you to attain high organic rankings. There are other factors, which also affect your rankings including age of your site, the number of inbound links (for example, how many sites link to your site as being an authority site), etc. which help a site to attain high rankings.

What are sponsored links?

Sponsored links are paid advertising links where websites compete or bid on specific keywords. When a visitor clicks on the link for your ad, you pay for the click.

What’s the difference between organic/natural search engine rankings and sponsored links?

Both organic and paid rankings are important to your business. The objective of search engine marketing is to get visitors to come to your website to do something. Whether it’s making a purchase, registering to attend an event or subscribing to your email database, ranking on the first page of the search engine results page (SERP) is just a means to that end.

Research indicates that most searchers do not look beyond the first page of results and there’s a significant difference in traffic between the first position and the sixth position. Ranking is key to your success.

No one can guarantee high rankings. Google, the most popular search engine, does not accept payment for natural results. The only way your site will rank high organically/naturally is based on content and relevancy.
